What the .vtt is, and what the DOCX is
WebVTT is the caption file an HTML5 player, YouTube Studio, and some meeting exports actually hand you.
It starts with WEBVTT. Each cue has a time range and text, sometimes a
<v Speaker> voice tag, sometimes align and position settings for the frame.
A DOCX is a Word document. Opening the .vtt in Word as plain text still shows the header,
cue ids, and --> lines. This page writes paragraphs from the cues instead.
What the DOCX keeps from WebVTT
- The caption text.
- A bold speaker name when the cue used a voice tag.
- A time range only while Show timestamps is checked. That on/off choice for an SRT is SRT to Word with Timecode or without Timecode.
Align, line, position, and color settings are dropped. Word is not a caption renderer, and those settings have nowhere to go in a paragraph.

How do I convert a VTT transcript to Word?

Can Microsoft Word open a .vtt file directly?
It opens as plain text if you choose All Files, but you get the WEBVTT header, cue timings, and broken lines. Converting writes clean paragraphs with optional timestamps and speaker labels.
Is a WebVTT file already a DOCX?
No. A .vtt is timed cues for a video player: a WEBVTT header, a start and end on each cue, and the caption text. Download .docx writes a Word document from those cues. Word does not play the video.
Do WebVTT voice tags become speakers in the DOCX?
Yes. <v Speaker> voice tags become bold speaker labels. Consecutive cues from the same speaker merge into paragraphs when Merge same speaker is on.
Do VTT position and color settings survive?
No. Align, line, position, and style settings are for the player. They are dropped.
